Summary of 520 Reading Class
Time is flying. Without notice, book is running at the end. Binder is becoming thicker and thicker. The final exam is coming soon. Our 520 reading only has two weeks left. But memories become into voices in my head. I cannot draw them out. I have known the happiness and laughing in this class. To know this class as a family is to know that we are truly in the presence of love. So I would like to extend my greeting to each one in this class and to this beautiful journey we have been spending together. I can think of no other people better prepared for their future’s
English learning, a future only us are ready to embark upon and sail.
In this class, we have been learning the important reading skills such as time reading, vocabulary, summary, paraphrase, etc. I believe all of us have been doing outstanding jobs. I do not know the experience from others. But for myself, I do keep some of the words from class in my mind such as keen for their green, merry-go-round, sleek aerodynamic lines. My summarizing skill and catching the main idea in a short period have never been improved so well. We are looking forward to use all this skills in further English learning or even academic learning. These are precious fortune we own in our life. Eilidh Singh is our teacher, an amazing teacher in my history. I love her idea of making an outline at the beginning of class. I love her intimation of sharing stories to us. In these classes, I even know her mother and sister better than our technical reading skills. It is wonderful to have such an unbelievable mother and sister. I love the causal talk before we start our class. Although it might take half an hour in a one hour and fifty minutes class, but this intimate talk absolutely bind us together with sharing every day’s experience and cut a lot of study time. I love her performance. She always acts to be whiny and use her head knock the broad. For her performance, she is as talented as Angelina Jolie, if she involves to movie. We all need to thank her for her shows and teaching. The most important is she is so nice.
During these three months study, we passed through the three chapters in our book, “Reading Matters”. They are “Creativity”, “the Age of Communication” and “Economics”. It is true that I breathe the new fresh air and enjoy tons of fun in these three chapters. I learned the science of jokes and the laugher, creativity related to our brains, the blessing and curse of cell phone, a communication transformed by cell phones, the consumerism in Economy, and the popular types of payment. Each chapter is a meaningful lesson. All these lessons are not only for English learning or exercise in the book but also the useful knowledge, the view how we concern which directly sent by authors in this book. We all need to thank for these author’s ideas and this amazing book.
This is the summary of all my reading class, but not a real summary. Too many personal responses added in this summary fails it won’t be higher than C if we score this article as a test. But this is my opinion. Furthermore, it is even everyone’s opinion, because it presents all the laughing in this class. We all will say thank you, 520 academic reading class.

Argue against " Impact of an aging population on the global Economy"
In "impact of an aging population on the global economy", author Jeremy J. Siegel opine s steep decline in the ratio of workers to retirees will crash the capital market in developed countries. And only capital ownership in developing countries as well as a healthy globalization can help developed countries solve this problem. I concede the decreasing rate of workers to retirees as a fact. However, I doubt the author's conclusion. And I state developed countries can maintain their capital market with the help of technology and exploiting developing countries.
To start with, author overlooked the effect caused by high technology. The decline in the ratio of workers to retirees wont be a problem, because high technology will increase the industry growth so that lack of goods should not be a problem to developed countries. Although the number will fall to about 2.5 workers per retiree. The high productivity will help less workers provide more supply to the whole retirement group and minimize the aging wave problem. Moreover, revolutionary invention still should be considered to benefit the developed country. For example, robot , being considered as the most revolutionary invention, is proceeding to be studied and applied. Scientists believe, as more and more research involve in artificial intelligence, robot will be originated eventually. And it will replace most of labour's work and work in a more effective and efficient way so that living off their wealth should not be a problem, because limited fortune can be exchanged to abundant supply.
The second fault author neglected is exploiting developing countries brings benefit to developed countries. It is the fact that companies in developed countries have being invested subsidiaries in developing countries in order to get higher profit by using cheaper labours. As larger and larger marker being explored, the developing countries and developing countries are no longer self-involved. Considering the assumption that there will be a rocketed increasing GDP in developing countries, developed countries still benefit so that the GDP would not shrink down dramatically as same as in author's prediction. Even the prediction is true in future, the exposeing market and high consumption in developing countries will promote the subsidiaries' business. Thus enough assets still can be sold into developing countries.
Even though all the assumption in this article are true, there still left the biggest doubt that author only analysis the forty years process when developing countries increase their market and trade with developed countries. However, after the year of 2005, when developing countries become developed countries, the decline ratio of workers to retiree still wont change. Based on author's information, when all countries stay in the same level, capital still cannot be sold out. This world still do not have enough workers to buy assets for their own age. So even the author's analysis about capital market is true, the globalization and depending on developing countries is not the solution.
To sum up, this argument does not give enough evidence to support to prove the reality, and some parts of it are questionable and need more information to testify its truth.

520 journal#3 academic reading and reading for pleasure
What is the difference, in your opinion, between academic reading and reading for pleasure? Describe the purpose of each, how you approach each, which you prefer, and why?
To begin with , I concede "reading for pleasure" and "academic reading" have different purposes. Reading for pleasure prefers to entertain people. When people have a rest, and want to find some fresh feelings. They usually look for reading for pleasure, such as novel, to fulfill themselves interests. In this condition, the function of reading for pleasure is as well as movie for enjoying fun at weekend. On the other hand, academic reading more approach to study in specific areas. For example, we generally can see academic reading as an argument to persuade readers to agree with some new discoveries or a description about a new theory or a character in history. Moreover, all of them are focusing on academic study. Based on this, we can see the first difference is purpose.
Furthermore , academic reading and reading for pleasure have different expression. Books from reading for pleasure are close to novels, fictions and poems, which use the narrative or descriptive way to express stories and author's motions. However, when we take a view on articles of academic reading, arguments and analysis are more common to express the author's idea and most of the articles only include the rational thought.
For these reasons, we can see these books from pleasure reading can create a comfortable atmosphere and bring fresh interest to audiences. For example, Harry Potter form J K Rowling be regarded as one of the most fantastic fictions and win the world's favour because it brings all the readers into a magic world to see what they cannot see in real world. And this grateful interest and amazing experience attract wide-range people falling in love with reading for pleasure. On the other hand academic reading introduce new theories and academic information to all the readers. Form these reading, we all appreciate new knowledge as one of factors can create new idea or inventions. Eventually in some specific research, I believe scientists are more like academic reading than pleasure reading when it is related to their study.
Frankly, I like reading for pleasure because it will bring pleasure and laughing into my life. However, I believe, there is an intersection between them. Because,in some sense, academic reading is also a pleasure of reading. When it refers to my study area, the content of article will attract me continuing reading the rest. And new thoughts generated from academic reading also can enrich my knowledge even create new opinion upon this study. Honestly, this is the most amazing experience for me when read academic reading.

520 journal#2
Find a reading on the topic of creativity that is not in the textbook. Read it and discuss it with someone if possible. In your journal, write about the article and mention the following: the subject, what interested you about this article, what some of the important ideas are, and why you think it is worth reading.
Today I found an interesting article " HOW TO KILL CREATIVITY" written by Teresa Ambile. It seems to eliminate our creativity. However this article only use this title to attract our attention and discuss how managers can activate their employees to be creative.
Firstly I admit I was allured by this intriguing topic. " How to kill creativity" this is not a regular article. Normally , all people's discussions and their attentions are about increasing creativity. And with this special title I am sure there will be a outstanding idea in this essay. However, the author does not illuminate different measurements to kill creativity. But she does list the components of creativity and what kind of qualities a leader should have to enhance other's creativity, which is still helpful a lot.
From the article, I understand that mostly business and creativity are controversy. Although business needs creativity to invent new ideas and products for sales. Meanwhile, the high deficiency and fast work rate usually do not leave employees enough time to think so that their reactivities are gradually being eroded. In this situation the leader's preeminence is crucial in showing how to bring a double-win not only to workers but also to enterprise.
In this article the author mentioned three components of creativity such as motivation, creative thinking skills and expertise. Moreover she also expatiate six skills from manager to widespread creativity, which are challenge, freedom, resources, work-group features, supervisory, encouragement, and organization.
As for my personal experience, it is really appreciated to understand the resources factor about creativity. First of all, time is one of the most important ingredient of resources. Time pressure can heighten creativity because both the time rush and the importance of the work make people concentrate. And with this increasing sense of challenge people will inspire their intrinsic motivation and do a good job. However, manager would kill creativity with fake deadline or too much pressure on employees. In this way, people feel over-controlled and being used which will definitely jeopardize the relationship between boss and fellows or even create the untrustiness and betrayal. Moreover, funds should also be considered in one of the resources. And it is also not that easy to control the balance between sufficiency and deficiency. With less funding, all the creativity such as research or project cannot continues. On the other hand, more financial support does not mean to boost creativity. Without enough inspirations and circumstances, indulging money is just one way of wasting resources. Thus combining all this factors might solves the problem of resource of creativity. Apparently it is not a easy job for manager create a circumstance for all employees and courage them for creativity.
Moreover, when I apprehend this article from different angle. I can still feel inspiration not only on business area. It is the same strategy to goal your target with freedom, challenge, resources, etc. For example, when you finish your work, you still need time to explore further. And all the discoveries or even thinking not listed are all your creativity. And we still need freedom, a freedom of self aspect that can help yourself dig the truth without misleading by someone else. Apparently when we extend this topic, we are not only seeing a strategy about business. We can view the whole structure of creativity and, furthermore , frame a blueprint for ourselves creativity.

520 R Journal #1
Review the first week in reading class
Write about the work you have done so far in the 520 R course. What are your impression of the class? Of your role in the class? What are your impressions of the textbook? What have you learned?
During the last week I am staying at Academic Reading class enjoying this precious moment with my classmates, with my friends and my teacher Eilidh who seems like a six year old child. In these seven days we had fun and we had knowledge. We all laughed and chatted like a big family under this releasing atmosphere, which can easily activate our mind to different angles. We learned the process of fast read, how to summarize and paraphrase, and the way to improve your reading habit. But the thing most interesting part I like in this lesson is the preview written before every class. I never saw it before. But it is good not only because we can comprehend the whole structure of the class but also we can easily take the notice and follow the step of teacher wherever she goes.
As for our roles in class, I expect we should be participants rather than the receivers. Because only attending in every discussion or question&answer, it is possible to accelerate your memory to understand reading skills and wilder yourself or even others' mind which is good for experience with separately aspects.
When we talk about our textbook, there is hardly having complain. I assume the reason suppose that lots of mutual activation and cooperation what the book announces for, which is funny to share your ideas with partner. However, in my opinion, I suggest that the book should emphasize a little bit more about the author's idea rather than out own opinion, which, comparatively, is not that important to absorb knowledge when we are having academic reading. Moreover, from the first chapter, I really appreciate the author's opinion about the highlight and surveying for helping us easier to catch up the main point and overview the whole paragraph as soon as possible.
In this one week study, there are two things I learned with deep impression. The first one is how to deal with fast read. After two exercises and time limit accounting., I know how to preview one article in fifteen seconds and how to speed up my reading rate by reading the chunk , highlight the main idea and ever activating schemata to guess the author's meaning before reading. On the other hand, which is far more interesting, that we can use our blogs to communicate and share our essays. As for my hope, this great idea expressed by this attractive long-distance education will show a giant effect as soon as we start to prepare our essay carefully and provide each other suggestible advice.
Thus, I am surely and fully expecting our class will enjoy more success and more happiness in the next couple of week.
